New Invention
On the A488 between Knighton and Clun there is a tiny group
of houses and a chapel which bear the name New Invention. The
chapel, probably Methodist in origin, is now some sort of small
factory. I'm interested in the name 'New Invention' and no one
has been able to help me. I know there is a similar name in the
Black Country and it's not difficult to see where this name originated
in the 18th or 19th centuries, but why is there such a name in
the depths of rural Shropshire?

Well Ivor, I have come up with two explanations. The first
is that the name comes from the story of the local blacksmith
who hit on the idea of fitting horseshoes on backwards to confuse
the enemy in times of war. The second is that 'New Invention',
near Clun was the first place to introduce textile spinning by
water power. (From Clun & Dist official guide 1950's) But
I can add a third in that it is more likely that the local wags
will invent a new explanation as to the origin of the name every
time they are asked!
Take your pick! But I'd be glad to hear from anyone who can substantiate
any of the above or come up with a different explanation! - T.C.
